Then discover the colonial city: Independence Parque with the Saint Philip Cathedral and colourful old wooden houses around it, famous Umbrella Street and Dona Blanca Passage. Try fresh coconut from a street vendor! Have some free time for a cup of dominican coffee or a cold beer. You can find some souvenirs here if you wish. Explore the Saint Philip Fortress along the harbor bay and have a look at the fishing boats on the Malecon seaside boulevard. Start your 7-hour tour in the old city area, where you’ll see buildings dating back to the 1600s. Take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Isabel, and enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding area. Admire the botanical gardens, and the statue of Christ that’s similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro. Visit the Fuerte San Felipe, located on a small peninsula on the Bahia de Puerto Plata. The fortress is the last vestige of the area’s colonial past. Stop at the small historical museum, and see the tiny cell in which Juan Pablo Duarte, the hero of the independence movement, was briefly confined.
