Puerto Plata Tour: History, Culture and Cable Car Ride

2. Puerto Plata Tour: History, Culture and Cable Car Ride

Start your 7-hour tour in the old city area, where you’ll see buildings dating back to the 1600s. Take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Isabel, and enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding area. Admire the botanical gardens, and the statue of Christ that’s similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro. Visit the Fuerte San Felipe, located on a small peninsula on the Bahia de Puerto Plata. The fortress is the last vestige of the area’s colonial past. Stop at the small historical museum, and see the tiny cell in which Juan Pablo Duarte, the hero of the independence movement, was briefly confined. This tour will end after you’ve enjoyed a delicious typical Dominican meal.

Overall, this was an excellent tour! Our guide, Diana, was wonderful! She was very warm, and knowledgeable. She provided interesting information about all the sights that we saw and answered any follow-up questions that we had. She made good recommendations for reasonably priced souvenirs, but not in a pushy way. Unfortunately, on the day that we were going on the tour, there was a last minute closure of the cable car, so we only got to go to the summit in an open air truck. (This was really unpleasant to me due to the diesel fumes.) But the views from the summit and the botanical gardens were amazing. The group was fairly large and we had 2 language groups. Diana made sure to give each group a full explanation. (We chose the bigger group because it was cheaper.) The only downside was that it was a bit rushed, due to size of the group. I would have liked to spend more time at the supermarket, and visit the Amber museum, but still an amazing tour! Highly recommended!!

Our guide, Antonio, was absolutely amazing. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and just overall a pleasure to be around. I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Puerto Plata, wanting to get a real feel of the city. Jose, our driver, was such a joy to be around and made us feel safe driving around the city. They both made us feel so welcome and gave us a true experience for the city. Thank you both so much!!

Was a very, very successful trip

The ride with the cable car was very worth it, it was an amazing view from above. Also the way to the cigar factory was very, very nice ...... was the best cigar factory we saw here (was the 4th). The rum factory was also very interesting. The chocolate museum was the absolute highlight, great chocolate at great prices

First I was at the wrong location (second gate, hotel lobby should have been the pick up point) Antonio was really like my own personal guide educating me about the history of Puerto Plata. Cable car was great and there was never a shortage of rum!

I rated it very well, despite the fact that the excursion sold was incomplete. Indeed the cable car is not working at the moment, which makes the excursion much less interesting.
