From Reykjavik: Silfra Fissure Snorkeling Half-Day Trip

1. From Reykjavik: Silfra Fissure Snorkeling Half-Day Trip

Undergo a unique underwater experience by snorkeling in the Silfra fissure on a half-day tour from Reykjavik. Frequently rated as one of the world's top 10 dive sites, Silfra offers up to 100 m (300 ft) of underwater visibility. Admire views of Iceland's stunning landscape as you ride from Reykjavik to the heart of Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. Snorkel in this location for 45 min with your guide, before returning to the warmth of the tour van and heading back to Reykjavik. The cold waters melt off a glacier 50 km (30 miles) away and make their way through lava fields to beautiful Thingvellir Lake. Although the chilly waters are too cold to support much in the way of marine life, Iceland's Silfra crack runs down between the American and European continental plates and offers amazing underwater views.

The fissure then widens into Silfra Hall. Here the full spectrum of Silfra’s colours and clarity become all the more apparent. At this point if you look at just the right angle you can see all the way to lake Thingvallavatn, over 150m away. Near to the opening to Thingvellir lake we will enter the Silfra Cathedral; as the depth reaches 23m you feel like you are flying over the boulders and glacial silt. Your snorkel is finished in the endless visibility of Silfra Lagoon. You then exit through the platform and walk back to the meeting point (∼250 meters). We really enjoyed this activity - very well organised and we were looked after all the way through by our fantastic guide Elsa. If you're worried about it being cold, so long as you wear extra socks and a thermal base layer you don't feel it on your body; your hands and face do get cold, but you warm up quickly with the hot chocolate they provide afterward. You also get changed in a trailer not in the open car park which is what we thought!! Elsa took loads of Gopro photos & sent them by the end of the day for us to download so we have loads of memories. A really great experience, and thoroughly recommended.

well organized tour and adaptive to changes like last minute pick up challenges. The actual activity was fun and unique. It is cold waiting to go into the water but very manageable once in the water. Plan on wearing two pairs of socks. If you have neck problems i would say that the effort and force required to put on the dry suit and take it off could be challenging.

Really awesome experience! Thanks to our Padi instructor Doris! She helped us a lot - before going into the water and also while snorkelling! She also did amazing pictures and also delivered the pictures within 2 days! For sure once again when I am back in Iceland!

A bucket list experience conditions were ideal instructors were great very helpful, I'm over 50 and a decent swimmer and I manage the swim relatively easily the water is unbelievably clear....

Brilliant. Great guide, Dimitrius. Made us feel comfortable and calm in the water with humour and kindness. Fabulously clear water in a special place.
