Full description

Take advantage of a unique opportunity to explore one of the most exclusive ancient sites in Rome throughout a special guided visit to the opulent Golden House of Nero. Experience the magnificent architecture of the notorious emperor’s vast palace, which was a vivid symbol of his immense ego.

After a fire devastated the capital of the Roman Empire in 64 A.D., the emperor had his architects fashion an immense dwelling over the smoldering remains of the devastated city.

What they came up with was awe-inspiring, with scarcely believable highlights including a rotating dining room open to the starry night sky and a massive artificial lake.

In 68 A.D., the emperor’s wicked ways caught up with him and he was forced to commit suicide. Nero’s immense party pad was bulldozed by his successors in an attempt to erase the memory of the despised despot almost before the paint had even dried.

His artificial lake was also filled in, in its place the Flavian Amphitheatre was erected only a few years later. The fabulous Domus Aurea, with its wonderful succession of spacious rooms and soaring vaults decorated with stunning frescoes, lay buried and forgotten for centuries beneath the earth.

After a long and meticulous restoration, the surviving rooms of Nero’s Golden House are once again open to visitors.

As you make your exciting descent into the eerie excavated remains of Nero’s Golden House today, you’ll be journeying back in time to the extravagant heyday of the Roman empire. Learn all about the fascinating life and times of Nero in the company of a guide.

great location Impressive VR demonstration that gave me an intense impression of ancient Rome. The downside was that the tour inside the building was done by an Italian guide who spoke rather slurred English. This was compounded by a very fast speaking rate and an FFP2 mask worn by him.

Like every tour, the event comes with the guide. We had booked an English speaking tour and then had 2 guides... a French lady for the inner area and an English lady (Amanda) for the trappings. Amanda explained a lot about the time of Nero and the corresponding myths, so that our picture of Nero is different now. Even though Peter Ustinov excelled as Nero in Quo Vadis, the real one wasn't that bad after all... the tour also includes a VR demonstration (take disinfectant spray with you) that helps to understand the dimensions. It seems the local restorers are struggling with the environment... so hop hop while this amazing building is still open

Overall it was overpriced. The virtual tour was extremely short, I expected more. But what annoyed me: After booking, I received an acknowledgment from Italy that the tour would not take place on that Sunday and I should therefore cancel. I said I will not cancel, they should cancel. Then the lady hung up. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from GetYourGuide. The young man told me he heard I wanted to cancel. I told him that wasn't true and the Italian partner shouldn't lie. Many phone calls followed. In fact, it stayed on the agreed date. A reputable business partner looks different, GetYourGuide was really good!
