Full description
Meet your art historian guide in St. Peter's Square and stroll across the piazza into Vatican City. In the Basilica, take the elevator part of the way up and then climb the remaining 171 steps. You can climb at a leisurely pace and enjoy the journey up with frequent stops. At the summit, witness the breathtaking 360-degree views of the Vatican City as it extends out into Rome and its seven hills. Take as many photographs as you can because you are very high and will be able to see for a long distance. After heading back down to ground level, take a brief break before entering St. Peter's Basilica. This famous monument is a triumph of art and architecture, unmatched anywhere else in the world. This is where Bernini's sculptures and Michelangelo's art rise above holy papal tombs and the necropolis of St. Peter himself.

This was my first time travelling to Italy and my first time visiting the Vatican and it did not disappoint. It is every bit as incredible as people will tell you. The tour guide is fantastic - they will tell you the history of the Vatican and how it came to exist. Michelangelo’s painting in the dome stunned me into silence, it was the most incredible and breathtaking thing I’ve ever seen. It is 100% worth every penny going to the Vatican and climbing the dome to get as close as you can to Michelangelo’s painting. I will 100% pay for this tour again next time I visit the Vatican and Italy.

Seeking to visit this place without queuing, we chose this option with the visit to the top of the basilica despite the fact that the tour is in English. Our Italian guide, Lizia, spoke English very easy to understand and deserves the mention of excellence for his way of telling us the story thanks to his knowledge and humor. Direct access (without any expectations) to the basilica on the way down is a real plus! Too bad the tour doesn't last longer and that we can't learn more about St Peter's basilica but after all this is not a guided tour of the basilica itself. A combination of the two (top + basilica) would be great - a suggestion for future visitors?

The climb to the dome is worth it, first you can see the mosaics of the dome up close and then you go up to the upper ring with beautiful views of Rome and St. Peter's Square. With the guide we learned many things about the basilica and its construction. It carried photographs and drawings where we could see what the basilica was like at the beginning. We took the early visit at 8.10am and although we had to get up early I recommend it since the stairs to walk up to the upper dome are quite narrow and we were able to climb quietly and without people being overwhelmed. It is also an experience to reach the Plaza de San Pedro in the morning and be practically alone!
