Know before you go

  • Due to ongoing COVID-19 preventative measures, the passage from the Vatican Museums to the St. Peter's Basilica is closed. The tour will include a 3-hour visit to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel instead of St. Peter's.
  • The Basilica is not accessible until further notice
  • St. Peter's is closed during the following times: Wednesdays: 8:00 AM -12:00 PM, December 24 and 31.
  • During these times the tour will visit other parts of the museums.
  • The Vatican can get very crowded all year round. June, July and August are particularly busy as they are high-season months.
  •   All visitors must pass through airport-style security. During high season the wait at security may be up to 30 minutes.
  • On rare occasions, St. Peter's Basilica closes without notice. In this case, the tour will include a 3-hour visit to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel instead of St. Peter's. The tour operator will not offer refunds.

Despite not being able to visit St Mark’s Basilica (as it closes at 6 PM, and our tour began at 3:15 PM) our guide was very knowledgeable on the history and art of the museum inside the Vatican. He identified himself as a Archeologist in his day job, and was able to teach us some of the differences between Greek vs Roman sculptures as well as the history behind the Popes who built the city and collected (aka stole) the art inside. All in all it was a very enjoyable visit and as an art buff, learning about Michelangelo and his strange habits was one of my favorites bits of history!

The Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica are an absolute highlight of a trip to Rome. As had unfortunately already been feared, the lead was not ideal. The comprehensibility of the guide is improved by the technical aids ((earphones and radio receiver), but the German-language explanations were still difficult to understand (missing vocabulary, Italian pronunciation of German vocabulary).
