Hamburg: Guided Schanzen District Walking Tour

2. Hamburg: Guided Schanzen District Walking Tour

Schanzenviertel has a very unique charm of its own. Some like it a lot, others don’t. After this 2-hour walking tour, you will certainly have enough information to make up your own mind about it. As a very lively urban neighborhood, Schanze is of course changing constantly. Still today, one can still find the original and alternative Hamburg of the 80s and 90s, but gentrification as always has been going on rapidly for quite some time. Over the last 10 to 15 years, more and more young, creative, and financially strong people feel attracted by Schanzenviertel’s milieu. This tour presents both sides, allowing you to get to know a former student and working class neighborhood, and a buzzing nightlife hot-spot caught between gentrification and shopping craziness. Visit the lively Marktstraße in the Karoviertel, lined with alternative shops, bars, and restaurants. The street art is all over the city and offers great photo motifs.  Look into some backyards and see how life works behind the mostly-modern building facades. Visit the Galao Strip, as the street Schulterblatt is called due to its countless Portuguese cafes and bars, and learn all about this relaxed nightlife spot. Here you will also find the controversial "Rote Flora", the autonomous cultural center. The tour ends here. Your guide will leave you with plenty of tips on where to shop, eat, or walk around during the rest of your time in Hamburg.
