Highlights
  • Visit one of the most important prehistoric sites in Greece
  • Walk the streets of this preserved city and admire the fine artwork
  • Learn about the way the people lived and how their society functioned
Full description
A Bronze Age settlement, an archaeological site that encapsulates fascinating insights to life back in 2000 B.C. After the great volcano eruption, the place remained buried under a thick layer of volcanic material as a Greek Pompeii for almost 4000 years, until it was accidentally discovered, during works to get volcanic soil from the island of Santorini to be used for building and insulating the Suez Canal. The excavations revealed one of the best-preserved ancient cities to this day with dense urban planning. In this guided tour walking around the 4000-year-old settlement, you will get an understanding of how the society was organized. See the paved streets, the remains of about 40 two-three stories high building complexes, kitchen and toilette facilities, a perfect plumping and drainage – sewage system, and astonishingly well-preserved decorations and murals. And just to excite your imagination furthermore we have to mention that there are theories that connect it with the myth of lost Atlantis

I’ve learned that when visiting historical sites, the experience is exponentially improved if a knowledgeable guide can highlight important facts and give context and background. Georgia was amazing! She gave our group of 6, including my 3 sons in their early twenties, an in-depth tour of Akrotiri. She gave us the perfect balance of history, details about the site itself, and information regarding what the archeologists have been able to piece together based on the findings-all in a very interesting and engaging manner. I highly recommend Georgia as a guide for anyone visiting Akrotiri!

We learned so much on this tour! Georgia was incredibly knowledgeable and answered all our questions. She also posed many questions to us which was helpful in gaining a better appreciation of the site. She also did a great job of steering us away from the crowds while allowing us to enjoy the full experience.

Georgia gave us so much information. She made sense out of everything we were looking at and we felt that we could really picture Akrotiri at its height. The length of the tour was perfect. The fact that the excavation is under a roof was also a big plus as it was a very hot day with a cloudless sky. Thanks so much Georgia!
