Here in Faial and Pico we work with Whale Spotters to find the whales and dolphins from land. A briefing about the marine biodiversity and cetaceans occurring in the region will be made. A marine researcher/Biologist from the University of Lisbon and Azores will be on board to collect data and to provide you a unique experience with up-to-date information on marine life. Species/Species: With over 25 cetacean species in the region, normally 2 to 3 different are observed on each tour. Sperm whales year-round, Blue and Fin whales in spring, while Bryde and Sei whales can occur also in the summer + several dolphin species that are resident. Transport: RIB boat 16pax Our expeditions take an average of 3 hours. We have tours in the morning at 09h00 and in the afternoon at 14h00. As our boat is a semi-rigid, we do not recommend this activity in case of severe back problems or in case of pregnancy. This unique 2.5-hour tour is the ideal situation for spotting whales and dolphins. The vessel has the capacity for 14 people, a glass bottom, and a 300 horsepower engine. With a 90% sighting success rate, the tour is assisted by a whale spotter located at the top of Monte Brasil. Take the opportunity to see some of the sea life found in the Azores including dolphins, whales, turtles and seabirds. Before the boat trip, listen to biologists explaining the safety measures aboard, the history of the area, the local wildlife and how to respect them. Then set off! After the 3-hour whale watching tour, stop in Vila Franco do Campo to enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. Following lunch, board a converted traditional fishing boat and head to Vila Franca do Campo islet, a volcanic crater off the coast that encloses a natural lagoon. Take one of the provided snorkels and diving masks and see the numerous protected fish species in this natural reserve. Following the tour, transfer back to Ponta Delgada by boat or van.

We had a tour on 2nd of January. Even though we were unlucky to spot the whales but saw plenty of common dolphins and rare to spot sun fish. The guide was very nice and informative. Definitely would go back!
