Full description
Enjoy a 2-hour cultural and historical tour of Bonaventure, a more than 200-acre land which one can freely wander but better explore with an exceptional guide at the helm. On this tour with Shannon Scott or one of his incredible guides, you will come to see the important aspects of the cemetery and understand Bonaventure’s many layers, from the 18th century plantation era, the Victorian cemetery, to all of the art and traditions of the place. You will stroll around the live oak avenues of the Cotton Boom yesteryear and hear about the people that made all of those buildings and squares in town so infamous and colorful. Some of the characters, such as "Crooner of 1500 Songs" Johnny Mercer and writer Conrad Aiken, are world renowned, while others you will come to love were famous only in their hometown Savannah. Other characters consist of photographers, painters, scientists, soldiers, industrialists, and duelists! Bonaventure is characterized by great sculpture and here you will see the works of some of the greatest artists of their period. The cemetery is one visual playground of symbols pertaining to everything from the Masonic Lodge mentioned in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code to the Bible, Ancient Egypt, and everything symbolizing the religious, fraternal and eternal. From angels to cherubs to lifelike figures of the people buried there, you'll get to see them all!

Meeting point

When arriving at 330 Bonaventure Rd, look for the pillared entrance with 2 goddess statues. As you drive through, follow to the right, which puts the red brick office building on your right. Exactly 50 feet (15 meters) up to your left is your first paved road (Mullryne Way). Take that left, following Mullryne Way as it snakes all the way down to the lower river bluff, and where it ends you'll observe a gravel parking lot on your right. Parking is free, so park there. Your additional landmarks will be a bridge in the distance and a marina. There is a single picnic table on the far side of the parking lot going towards the marina. Your guide will meet you in the general area of the table.

Shannon Scott was awesome. His knowledge of the people and area were amazing. He was humorous and friendly. Who knew a cemetery could be so enlightening. I would recommend this tour to everyone and would do it again if I’m ever in the area. My friends and I totally enjoyed the tour. He mentioned numerous other activities in Savanna and we will take advantage of those suggestions when we return for another trip.

Jessica was a great guide! Our tour was small, so very nice. Jessica knew so much about the architecture and history of the cemetery and its inhabitants. She was engaging and interactive and answered all our questions. It was a very enjoyable experience and I highly recommend Shannon Scott Tours!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and welcomed questions. The tour wasn't rushed at all, you get your money's worth. It focused on the history and beauty of Bonaventure, which is what I was looking for. We even got educated on some iconic symbols used in burial statuary and headstones. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about it.
