4. Sillustani: Chullpas de Sillustani Afternoon Half-Day Tour

Your half day tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Puno around 2:00 PM, to start your visit to the ceremonial center of Sillustani, located 34 km from the city of Puno. This tour visit will allow you to appreciate the magnificent architecture and engineering. The chullpas are circular stone towers erected to house the funerary remains of the principal authorities of the ancient settlers of Collao (Altiplano). Some reach up to 12 meters high and are characterized by their base being smaller in diameter than the upper part. A short distance from the archaeological complex is the site museum, where various pieces of the Kolla, Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures are preserved. One of the most famous attractions of the Sillustani complex is the "Chullpa del Lagarto", a funerary tower that represents the highest chullpa of the complex. This was built in the Inca era and raised with square stones that fit perfectly. It was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century by huaqueros who sought the treasures of the place. Another beautiful place in Sillustani is the Umayo lagoon, an incredible mirror of water that reflects the blue sky and the white clouds of Puno. This lagoon houses an island that is a reserve for the protection of local vicuñas. This tour of Sillustani takes approximately 1 hour and you will be going back to Puno, where you will arrive around 5:00 PM.

Our tour begins with the pick up from the hotel at 2:00 p.m., then we will embark on a trip of approximately 40 minutes. in which we will have a viewpoint where you can appreciate the city of Puno. Upon arrival we will have a 1h30min walk in the archaeological complex of Sillustani. In the surroundings you can see some (Waruwaru) which are artificial mounds of earth designed to protect crops against frost and flooding. With luck in Sillustani you will also be able to observe wild pigs from the Indies, birds such as flamingos and other wild animals from the high Andes. At the end of the tour we will be able to appreciate Lako Umayo, which is located in front of the archaeological zone. On the way back we will stop at a local house, where we will be able to see the way of life in the area, taste typical foods and take pictures with the families' llamas and alpacas. We will be in Puno at 6:00 p.m.

The tour starts around 14:00 p.m. with the pick up from your hotel in Puno, to board our mobility towards the Chullpas, the trip takes about 40 minutes. Arriving at the complex along with our guide will tour the place for about 1 hour. In an altiplanic, more than 30 kilometers north of Puno, is the Sillustani Chullpas or burial towers of the pre-Inca culture, one of the largest necropolis in the world. The complex is surrounded by a landscape of stunning beauty that seems to be summarized in the serene waters of the Umayo lake, the archaeological complex stands out for its gigantic "chullpas" (kind of stone towers), built by the Collas and Incas, to bury their dead. Many of them are over 12 meters high and have a larger diameter at the top than at the base. A challenge to the laws of gravity and balance, a detail that makes them unique in the continent. Tombs of noble collas, eternal abode of the Sons of the Sun, who when dominating these lands, would add architectural features similar to those of the Temple of the Sun or Coricancha in Cusco. The tour is ending around: 18:00 p.m. with the return to the city of Puno.

10. Tour to Sillustani pre Inca Tombs

We will pick you up from your hotel located in the city of Puno to go towards the archaeological site of Sillustani Puno. This amazing complex is located on the top of a peninsula on the shores of Lake Umayo, 22.3 miles from the city of Puno and Lake Titicaca. This place has circa 90 funerary towers built by the Kolla culture, an Aymara community developed before the Inca Empire. A lot of mummies have been found inside these towers, including important people as priests, leaders and nobles. They were previously mummified and were places as fetal position, along with all their belongings such as gold, silver and ceramics. The state of conservation of these burial towers is impressive, all of them were made with stones with varying shapes that fix each other perfectly. The architecture and engineering used by the Kolla culture was quite advance for its time. Some of them are 12 meters’ high, where the Lagarto Chullpa is the tallest and most representative tower. The Sillustani tour continues with the visit to a local family that breeds Alpacas and they will show us how they process and cook their own food, their lifestyle, their looms and how they maintain ancestral customs. At the end of the visit, you will be transferred back to the hotel.
