Full description
Step into the life and times of the “Queen of Crime” and world’s best-selling author, Agatha Christie, on this guided walking tour in Torquay. Visit places that inspired her plots and characters, see where she became engaged, learn about her contributions in both World Wars, and more. After meeting with your guide, begin your tour with Agatha’s early years in Torquay. Learn about her servants, her home schooling and how she invented imaginary friends to act out the stories she wrote. Then, follow the seafront, stopping at Princess Pier. Admire the scenery and walk where Agatha and her friends used to roller skate alongside wealthy Victorians promenading in their finest clothes. Pass Torquay’s famous Pavilion which originally opened as a concert hall. In 1913, Agatha became engaged to Archie Christie here, who was one of Britain’s first pilots. Stroll through the gardens at Torre Abbey. Hear how a soiree arranged for Belgian refugees in 1914, at which Agatha was attending, provided the inspiration for Poirot. En route, guests will discover Agatha’s hugely successful formula for writing murder mysteries and how she was inspired by her surroundings and the people she encountered. This formula eventually led to Agatha becoming known as the world’s best-selling fiction author. Pass through the Italian Gardens and recount Agatha’s 10-day disappearance that led to the biggest manhunt in British history and influenced her decision to escape to the Middle East. Reach the Grand Hotel and get an insider look at Agatha’s marriage to Archie and their 2-night honeymoon here before Archie boarded the train to return to the Front. Meanwhile, Agatha would contribute to the war effort by volunteering as a nurse in Torquay. Visit the train station where fictional characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple met as they stepped off the Orient Express to be met by the world’s media. Hear the final chapter of her life and the impact she's made on billions of people across the world and still does today.

We had an amazing tour with Graham. He is a great guide, with humour and a great knowledge of Agatha Christie. The rain was pouring down in the morning so he rescheduled the tour til later in the day. That was a great service. The tour covers A.C life but also general history of Torquay. I can recommend this tour to anyone with a soft spot for A.C. Anne Skovmark, Denmark

I had a wonderful tour with Graham. As I was the only one on the tour, it was perfect as we had great fun. He is very knowledgeable and I was enthralled by all that I learned. I have read most of Agatha Christie's books but now, because of Graham, I have much more insight of the woman and the author. I was so lucky to have Graham as the guide. He is the best. Regards, Nada from Vancouver Island Canada.
