Tour Tremé: African American & Creole History Tour

1. Tour Tremé: African American & Creole History Tour

Take a guided walking tour of Tremé, the birthplace of New Orleans jazz and the center of the city’s Creole culture. Your licensed guide, a local historian, will tell you about this vibrant neighborhood’s African-American history and the rise of the civil rights movement. As you explore this area, you’ll visit St. Augustine Church, The Tomb of the Unknown Slave, and the only laundromat that made its way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Jelly Roll Morton, Alphonse Picou, and Trombone Shorty are just some of the New Orleans jazz greats who were born here. Along the way you’ll see locations from the set of the HBO series Tremé and learn about the city’s modern brass band tradition. Today this neighborhood is still home to musicians as well as artists and craftsmen who contribute to the development of the ongoing neighborhood story.

The Tour of Tremé was amazing. We were able to see so many iconic locations during this walking tour. Although we were in the heat of the day, our tour guide, Malika, was very considerate by making sure we were in the shaded areas as we stopped and she gave us more in-depth information about each place. We were even able to experience a special prayer ritual at the Prayer tree in Congo Square. Malika took her time throughout the tour to share her wealth of knowledge on New Orleans and it’s vast cultural history. She took her time and did not rush us through the process. Overall, we had an absolutely great time on this tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning, not just about Tremé, but also about New Orleanian history.

Phil was a tremendous tour guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about New Orleans, it’s history and the neighborhood! We loved the Treme tour - even our 8 year olds were engaged and interested the entire time. Would tour again with Phil in a heartbeat!

This tour takes you to the authentic New Orleans. I learned history that made the city what it is. Erin our tour guide was awesome. She is very knowledgeable and friendly. If you want to learn about New Orleans that's not the French Quarter this is the one to take

The tour was very insightful and provided a lot of unexpected information that increases the appreciation and respect for my culture. It was excellent and we are so thankful we booked this an addition to our trip.

Malika was an excellent. She was informative, and accomodating, especially in this New Orleans heat.
