Guided Visit. Eastcoast. Fantastic beaches &historical sites

10. Guided Visit. Eastcoast. Fantastic beaches &historical sites

If anywhere conforms to postcard Mauritius, it’s the glamorous but little-developed east coast, where you’ll find miles of powdery beaches, azure seas, and hotels and resorts frequented by royals and celebrities. In fact, an aerial view of the island playground, Île aux Cerfs, with its white sandbars … The quiet fishing village of TROU D’EAU DOUCE, founded by the Dutch and named after a freshwater spring. Today, the southeast trade winds caress Mahébourg with a constant cooling sea breeze year-round and its narrow streets, sprinkled with dilapidated Creole-style wooden houses, some from the seventeenth century, are interesting to wander. Locals still sit outside like they used to do all over Mauritius, and women continue to wash clothes at La Board underneath the hundred-year-old Cavendish Bridge. Lovely views are to be had from the waterfront towards Lion Mountain across the bay. The south’s only market, Mahébourg market is the most traditional on the island, with bargain basement prices. The centrepiece is the bustling food market, where men wander with sacks of potatoes on their heads past colourful fresh fruit and vegetable stalls under makeshift canopies. It’s open daily, although most excursions come to Mahébourg on a Monday when it’s busiest. A small section sells crafts, such as woven baskets, wooden souvenirs and spices, there’s a huge array of inexpensive, dazzling traditional Indian clothing and the dholl puri from the snack stalls is reputed to be among the island’s best. Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais (1699–1753) started his illustrious career as a ship boy in the navy at the age of ten. Later appointed Governor of Île de France (present-day Mauritius) by the French East India Company in 1735, he arrived in Mauritius aged 36. His first job was to transfer the capital from Grand Port (present-day Mahébourg) to Port Louis, which was more sheltered and had a superior harbour.

What people are saying about Trou-aux-Biches

Absolutely fantastic trip. Our guide was so knowledgeable and explained everything through the trip. We all felt very safe being guided through the markets and loved seeing the sights of Port Louis. There were 7 of us travelling as a family a family and our guide look lots of photos of us all together. At the botanical gardens, our guide knew everything about all the plants and we had a great time learning about the palms and smelling all the spice plants. He was great with our youngest child and made him feel very special. The vehicle was comfortable and the driving great. The communication from Carine when arranging the trips was so informative and reliable that we used this company to book another 2 trips after we arrived. Thank you

Our driver was excellent ..so attentive to our needs and took us wherever we wanted to go ..and always watching out for us. His time was our time and we went to Port Lois waterfront, viewpoint overlooking Port Lois and the Botanical Gardens ..then up to Grande Baie and followed the coastal road back to our hotel ..stopping off at a local supermarket for Mauritian rum ! Can't remember his name but he was excellent ..so a big thank you to him ..car was really comfortable and his driving was brilliant

Beautiful tour with crazy beaches (Grand Baie, Cap Malheureux and Mont Choisy) unique churches and temples (Notre Dame Auxiliatrice and Sri Daubadee Ammen) to finish with the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. The driver was very polite, he drove well and managed to show me everything in the program. Top!

Excellent trip enhanced by our driver/guide, Ragesh. His knowledge, experience and flexibility throughout the day was outstanding. Port Louis has to be experienced as does the botanical gardens and with an expert driver/guide like Ragesh it can be achieved even on very hot days.

Our Guide was really nice. Took is to all places and told us on the way a lot about places, people and the Culture.
