Full description

Start your tour by crossing the bridge into Campo del Ghetto Nuovo (New Ghetto Square) into the Jewish Ghetto in the Cannaregio District. Hear about how the Venetian Jews were confined to the island and how it became densely populated.

Learn about how the resourceful residents found the solution to the overcrowded conditions; building tenement blocks up to six stories high – an innovative novelty in 16th century Europe. Visit a series of bas-reliefs in the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo – a sight most visitors to Venice never get to see. Learn about how Napoleon tore down the gates of the Jewish Ghetto, giving Jews the right to live anywhere in this grand “Floating City.”

See how this part of the city is still awash with Jewish culture, bakeries, restaurants, and handicraft stores. Discover this hidden niche of cultural life in Venice as your local guide escorts you from one fascinating corner to the next, regaling you with tales of past residents that will add a rich undertone to your visit to Venice.

Chiara was a brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable local tour guide who catered for our entire group. We were a mix of British people and Colombians and we had an 11 year old and ten year old in our group and Chiara managed to keep us all engaged for the whole two hours speaking in brilliant English. There is a lot of Jewish history in this tiny piece of Venice and Chiara pieced it all together nicely and respectfully.

Chiara was a wonderful guide and we were very happy to share 2 hours with her. She is very informative, answered all or most of our questions and seems to truly enjoy sharing her know ledge. We would recommend her anytime and will let our friends know about her if they come to Venice.

Surprisingly there were only two of us on the tour, which of course was awesome. We had a lady who knew everything, you could ask her anything about history and Venice, and she totally listened to us. As a born Venetian, she knew every corner. Her German was perfect and therefore there were no communication problems. Great !!!
